Constructed in stages starting in 2002, the Guantanamo Bay detention camp was used to house Muslim militants and suspected terrorists.  The U.S. will house migrants who entered the country illegally at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba — the military prison where terrorism suspects have been kept for more than 20 years.  On January 11, 2002, the United States opened the detention facility at the U.S. naval base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Nearly eight hundred Muslim men and boys have been held there over the years, all but a handful without charge or trial.  Just 15 men remain at the prison, down from hundreds when it opened 23 years ago. But the costly operation could go on for years.  Current President Joe Biden has promised to shut down the military prison. The prison at Guantánamo Bay naval base opened on January 11, 2002 and was created in order to house suspected terrorists captured during the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan.
