Guantanamo Bay Naval Base: A Military Outpost Under Scrutiny

LOOK BACK: Why Guantanamo naval base is U.S. outpost in Cuba

As the premier southern-most deep-water U.S. Naval Base, Naval Station Guantanamo Bay strives to provide state-of-the-art self-sustaining infrastructure while supporting unified, joint inter-agency operations and training.  A large, 45-square-mile (116-square-km) U.S. naval base, which now includes fortifications and airfields, was established by treaty in 1903. Since the 1959 revolution, the Cuban government has protested the U.S. presence and periodically has threatened to seize the base.  President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he will sign an executive action ordering the federal government to prepare the US Naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to house tens of thousands of migrants.
