 On February 15, 1961, the entire 18-member U.S. figure skating team is killed in a plane crash in Berg-Kampenhout, Belgium. The team was on its way to the 1961 World Figure.  On this day, Feb. 15, 1961, the greatest tragedy in figure skating history happened. Today, we remember the crash of Sabena Flight 548 carrying the 1961 U.S. World Team..  It has been 60 years since the entire U.S figure skating team died in a plane crash in Belgium. For those who knew the skaters best, the loss remains vivid.  F ifty-seven years ago this month, the U.S. figure skating team was devastated by a plane crash. The star-spangled athletes were on their way to compete at the 1961 World.  Fifty years ago, on the morning after Valentine's Day, a Sabena 707 plunged into a field near Brussels. Eighteen U.S. figure skaters were killed — the elite of a nation's whole.
